Giselle Rivero Navea

Research Scientist

Dr. Giselle Rivero Navea is a Specialist in Medical Microbiology. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Medical Sciences in Havana, Cuba, followed by postgraduate training in two specialties: first in Family Medicine and later in Microbiology, both from the same university. In 2016, she completed her Master of Science in Bacteriology and Mycology at the “Pedro Kourí” Institute of Tropical Medicine. Dr. Rivero Navea completed her undergraduate studies and clinical training at the renowned “Manuel Fajardo” Faculty of Medical Sciences. Since 2002, she has served across various levels of the Cuban National Health System—from primary care as a General Practitioner and Family Medicine Specialist to secondary care at “General Calixto Garcia” University Hospital, and tertiary care at the “Pedro Kourí” Institute of Tropical Medicine. She has received specialized training in areas including antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria and fungi, diagnosis of intestinal parasitosis (from morphological to molecular methods), viral infections and prevention, and biological risk assessment techniques. Additionally, she completed a postgraduate course in “Didactic and Methodological Fundamentals for Teaching in Medical Sciences Careers” and served as a professor of Microbiology at the “Calixto Garcia” Faculty of Medical Sciences. Dr. Rivero Navea’s current areas of interest focus on the microbiological testing of stem cell-based preparations and other bioproducts. She utilizes advanced methods such as nucleic acid testing (NAT), including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR), product-enhanced reverse transcriptase (PERT) assays for entire virus families, random-priming methods, pyrogen/endotoxin and Mycoplasma testing, and rapid sterility testing for short-lived bioproducts. Her core microbiology skills include primary bacterial isolation from various sources, strict adherence to universal biosecurity protocols, and proficiency in epidemiological biostatistics. She is experienced in planning and executing experimental protocols and is highly proficient with laboratory equipment such as optical microscopes, centrifuges, electronic devices, weighing tools, chemical reagents, and microbiological dyes. Dr. Rivero Navea possesses strong capabilities in implementing laboratory methodologies, requesting and managing microbiological supplies, and conducting a wide range of diagnostic tests. She also excels in preparing investigative reports, documenting laboratory processes, and developing standard operating procedures in microbiology.
